Greenland to New York Departure Date:  SEPTEMBER 22, 2009

Your Greenland Cruise to New York Itinerary Includes:

Day 1: Depart the U.S.

Depart the U.S. on your transatlantic flight to Copenhagen

Day 2: Copenhagen

Immerse yourself in history as you begin your adventure in Copenhagen. From its humble Viking origins to its current position as one of the world's premier design capitals, Copenhagen offers an experience rich in culture and tradition. Step back in time and embark on the voyages of the Vikings at the National Museum. Enjoy the blooming flowers of Tivoli Gardens and of course no visit to Copenhagen would be complete without a visit to the famous Little Mermaid statue. Culture, scenery, history - Copenhagen. The perfect beginning to your Greenland expedition. Overnight in Copenhagen. [B]

Day 3: Copenhagen / Kangerlussuaq / Embarkation

From Copenhagen you will board your flight to Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq is the main gateway to Greenland and a settlement in the Sisimiut community. The airport was built by the Americans during World War II and was open as an American base until 1992. Today, Kangerlussuaq is a commercial airport. The Kangerlussuaq dock is very close from the airport, and transport to the docks is by bus. There is no harbor in Kangerlussuaq that can accommodate the MS Fram and therefore embarking the ship requires the use of the ship's shuttle boats (PolarCirkel boats). It is advisable to bring rainproof jackets, trousers and mosquito repellent in your carry-on luggage to wear during the transfer to the MS Fram. [D]

Day 4: At sea

While we are at sea, a series of lectures will be held on board on topics related to history and wildlife in the area. [B/L/D]

Day 5: Nuuk

Nuuk lies at the mouth of one of the world's largest and most spectacular fjord systems. Sights in Greenland's capital include the picturesque old buildings in "Kolonihaven," the Greenland Home Rule building, and the National Museum, which houses eight 15th century mummies founded in Qilakitsoq. [B/L/D]

Day 6: Ivittuut

The community of Ivittuut is the smallest in Greenland. In the summertime some of the old houses here are used for tourism. Ivittuut is a former cryolite mine, which was extracted for use during World War II. The mine was closed in 1987. [B/L/D]

Day 7: Qassiarsuq (Brattalihd)

Viking adventurer and explorer Erik the Red settled here after fleeing from Iceland, lending his name to the Eriksfjord. Vikings called Qassiarsuk the Eastern Settlement. It's believed Erik the Red's son Leif Ericson sailed from here on his epic journey to find America. In Qassiarsuk, take a guided walk through the settlement to the reconstructed farm, longhouse, and church of Erik the Red. [B/L/D]

Day 8 & 9: At Sea, Davis Strait

While we are at sea, a series of lectures will be held on board immersing you in Viking history. [B/L/D]

Day 10: St. Anthony, Newfoundland

Arrive in Canada. Tender to St. Anthony, a 1.5 hour drive from L'Anse aux Meadows, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where Ericson first set foot in America. [B/L/D]

Day 11: Red Bay, Labrador

Red Bay is the site of the Baque whalers in the 15th century. Today some of the best-preserved cultural heritage is found here. Here, an optional bus tour on the Labrador Coastal drive to the Point Amour lighthouse, tallest in Atlantic Canada, can be enjoyed. We stop at 7,500 year old L'Anse Amour Burial National Historic Site. [B/L/D]

Day 12: Corner Brook, Newfoundland

Enjoy a one hour drive to Gros Morne National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site. [B/L/D]

Day 13: Sydney, Nova Scotia

Sydney is an urban community in Nova Scotia, Canada's Cape Breton Regional Municipality. It is the largest urban center on Cape Breton Island. Together with Sydney Mines, North Sydney, New Waterford and Glace Bay it forms the Industrial Cape Breton region. [B/L/D]

Day 14: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Rich in history and natural beauty, the rugged coastlines of this part of Nova Scotia present us with the first British town to be settled in Canada. Today Halifax is a vibrant mix of the old and the new, with some spectacular landscapes. [B/L/D]

Day 15: At Sea

While we are at sea, you will experience a rich series of lectures held on board to introduce you to the exciting travel yet to come. [B/L/D]

Day 16: Gloucester, Mass (Boston)

Gloucester is a part of Boston's North Shore and is located between two major whale feeding grounds, which attract humpbacks, finbacks, dolphins and a myriad of seabirds to the rich waters off its coast. Discover how this community developed into an important fishing port, largely due to its proximity to Georges Bank and other fishing banks off the east coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Besides catching and processing seafood, Gloucester is also a center for fish research. [B/L/D]

Day 17: At Sea

While we are at sea, a series of lectures will be held on board further enhancing this amazing Greenland cruise to New York. [B/L/D]
